How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is more info the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store.
